CHARACTER INFO.
NAME: Nanami Yasuri
CANON: Katanagatari
AGE: Canon says mid-20s, so...25? 26?
APPEARANCE: it's okay to think "wow so smol" because she is in fact very smol
CANON POINT: EP7 - between her first fight and rematch with Shichika.

BACKGROUND: ill just make this a link if i ever really app but

Her father was the 6th head of the Kyotouryuu school of fighting, that is a sword style that does not use a sword. Despite her being the elder child, he decided against making her his successor because he was fucking terrified of her. It goes to show why, because despite the fact she hasn't received any formal training whatsoever, and hasn't even trained a day in her life, she's still mastered the style to an extent even her brother, the one who was chosen to be the next head, hasn't reached simply by watching him train. That's it. She's a prodigy among prodigies who can learn something from seeing it once, and master it from seeing it twice.

But all is not well, because the simple fact is Nanami is too powerful for her own good. She's so powerful that her own body cannot take it, and so she is constantly in agonizing pain which would have killed anyone else years ago. She can't make use of her full strength and is doomed to never do so either, but despite that she is still leagues ahead of her brother. When he defeated the strongest swordsman in all of Japan, all he could think was that the strongest man in Japan still wasn't as difficult an opponent to fight as her.

Nanami grew up on an island with noone else but her brother, being isolated from society the entire time. She has a strange set of morals and doesn't see herself as human, rather a weapon, which stems from a few things. Her inhuman strength, her general apathy and most importantly the fact that the "sword" wielded by a practitioner of Kyotouryuu is the user themselves, making them the sword and swordsman simultaneously. But also she recognises she's kinda fucked up but doesn't care too much...

Anyway, after she finds out Shichika and Togame aren't moving fast enough for their sword hunt, she goes out by herself and wipes out an entire village and a temple of monks to get an evil kunai. Stabbing it into her chest fixes how frail her body is, allowing her to start kicking more ass than before. After her rematch with her brother we learn that she doesn't copy opponent's techniques to become stronger, but instead uses other people's techniques (which are inferior to her own) to weaken herself to the point she can be beaten. Except even when he lands a finishing blow she isn't beaten, so he's forced to kill her again. Dead end.

PERSONALITY:

On the surface, she seems to fit the role of a particular older sister type. She's quiet and polite, sickly but otherwise concerned over her brother. Delicate, pale and (probably) beautiful. Moves gracefully. For someone who's quick to make judgments of other people, they'd easily dismiss her as weak and demure, considering all of this.

But past all this is a stubborn woman, far too eager to prove herself. She detests being pitied or babied for her frailty, and actually pushes herself too far in her attempts to act As If Everything's Fine, overexerting herself and basically making her feel worse as a result...sort of. The truth is she actually feels very little because of her living in constant agony, and so the quietness of her character is actually stoicism. She's more distant than she is simply reserved or modest, because she can hardly feel anything at all.

Typical of someone who's grown up on an island away from society, coupled with the fact she's become so numb and can't feel you there, Nanami has a serious lack of empathy and knowledge of the outside world, similar to how her brother was at the beginning of the series, who couldn't tell apart Togame and another woman despite their radically dissimilar appearances simply because they were the same height. However, for her the disconnect from her own humanity is far greater, shown by the fact she mercilessly slaughtered the entire Itezora village without remorse, not to mention it wasn't for any real purpose; she'd simply gotten lost and, having stumbled upon their village, killed them simply because she could.

That being said, whereas Shichika is shown to be really stupid, Nanami is in fact the opposite. As mentioned previously she's a prodigy, and hand in hand with such a title goes the fact that she's really intelligent. The fact that she's able to combine stolen techniques, see through flaws in other techniques or even simply master other techniques practically instantly is proof enough of this. Despite her general aloof nature, she seems to genuinely enjoy taking things apart or working them out, which is supported by her lamenting that she's jealous of people who need to put effort into life. She finds no challenge in anything because of her intelligence.

That being said, there are two sides to her. While in everyday life she exhibits herself as the hardworking, sickly older sister who has a distaste towards being looked down upon, Nanami is in possession of a much more dangerous side to her, which is what terrified her father so much to begin with. The truth is she lacks human empathy and even sees humans as even less than her brother had at the beginning of the series, not just with genuine ignorance, but with downright contempt. A dying man reaches for her, and from her perspective all she sees is a patch of weeds which she repeatedly stomps and only stops the moment blood stains her. It can also be said that the polite, graceful Nanami is simply a matter of adhering to general civility; the truth is she's a fairly wicked person at heart, going so far as to smile sincerely when she's hurting others, physically or otherwise.

But the truth is that at the heart of her character, she harbors a fatalistic outlook on her own life. Nanami is the definition of unshakeable, a combination of her treating everyone weaker than her with contempt and everyone stronger than her as a way out of living. The fact is she simply doesn't enjoy living. Her father cursed her for being both strong and weak, and her mother believed her useless for not being able to die. Neither treated her as parents should have and, when haunted by their memories that she brought forth using a stolen necromancy technique, simply responded it was worthless because every harsh thing they said about her was something she didn't need them to tell her, implying she already felt this way about herself. She's only truly happy when Shichika finally kills her.

Nanami is neither a hero nor a villain, because circumstances don't allow her to be either.

ABILITIES:

At a very basic level of physical attributes, despite her frailty, Nanami is by no means weak. In fact, a huge aspect of her character revolves around how powerful she is; she stole the strength of an adult izetora. For comparison's sake, the weakest child Izetora (literally, admitting she was the weakest member of her clan having officially lost every strength contest) was strong enough to freely swing a sword so heavy it sunk into the earth when it was dropped. She then admits she stole that strength to weaken herself enough so her brother could kill her.

In terms of durability, it's more like a curse for her. Her incredible power hurts her constantly, described when she was younger as being the kind of strength that should have simply killed her, yet her body refused to die. No matter how painful, if something does not instantly kill her, it won't kill her, and she likely doesn't even feel it because of the pain she's enduring constantly.

In terms of speed, she moves so quickly that generally we aren't shown Nanami attacking when she fights, only her appearing after she's executed her movement. Even when thrown into the ceiling, her brother immediately questions what she did, simply because it all happened too fast. She also uses a technique that launches over 200 fatal strikes in the time it takes someone to fall from a standing position onto their back.

Her most prominent "power" is referred to as Migeika; it's a style of perfect observation resulting from her incredible intelligence. She can learn any technique upon seeing it once, and master it upon seeing it twice. It also allows her to flawlessly read her opponent's movements, meaning she can predict their attacks ahead of time and dodge them accordingly. The weakness to this is obvious though, in that she can't see in absolute darkness making it worthless.

That being said, there is a restriction: she could, for example, learn kamehameha upon seeing it because that is based on the manipulation of Ki in one's body, which is something everyone is implied to have, or ninjutsu from Naruto simply because they're techniques that are learned. She could not, however, mimic the abilities of gems from Steven Universe, or general magical abilities, simply because she can't use magic as she is. Generally it's something better left discussed between players.

However, she did copy the physical strength of an Izetora which was simply a genetic thing, so...it has some wiggle room.

Nanami is a master of her family's fighting style, having watched every move Shichika was ever taught and mastered it through observation. For convenience's sake I won't list every move ever used in the series, but most importantly she can attack through obstacles (like armor, or if someone had particularly durable skin but weak fleshy inside) through manipulating the force behind her strikes. She can separate a soul from a body in the event it's possessing someone. She can generate afterimages of herself, even sending them forward in a feint-style movement. Nanami also has her own personal technique for attacking at long range; she holds her hand out flat with the fingers pressed tightly together, and by swinging her hand can generate a shockwave strong enough to slice through a person like a sword would, only from a distance.

Aside from this, she's copied several abilities in the series from other characters. From Kamakiri, the ability to length her nails to the extent she can use them as razor sharp claws capable of piercing right through someone's torso. From Chocho, the ability to render herself weightless, allowing her to even cross large bodies of water by skating on them. This includes the weight of anything she's carrying, as the original user of this technique crossed the ocean with a fully grown man on each shoulder, without sinking. From Mitsubachi, she gained the ability to precisely launch small projectiles with incredibly accuracy.

She also managed to overcome the curse of the Kyotouryuu style, which is to say that as "swords" they cannot wield swords, yet from observing someone using one, she is capable of wielding one - granted, it would be weakening her greatly to do so, as her body is more dangerous than any blade.

The final thing to note is from her canon point she has the Akuto Bita blade stabbed into her chest. It effectively grants her a constant rejuvenation effect, forcefully removing any injuries or weaknesses from the body and allowing her to fight properly with it so long as it remains stuck in her chest.

INVENTORY: Her clothing and the kunai-shaped Akuto Bita stuck in her chest.
